London leisure projects in contention to be named city's best architecture of 2016

A host of leisure projects have made the shortlist for the 2016 New London Award, which celebrates the UK capital’s most innovative and inspiring new schemes.

Organised by New London Architecture (NLA), which promotes the city’s built environment, 136 projects have been nominated across 15 categories, including ones for public spaces, cultural projects and hotels.

High profile leisure projects in this year’s awards include Shaftesbury Theatre by Bennetts Associates, the Wellcome Collection museum by WilkinsonEyre and the new Gagosian Gallery in Grosvenor Hill by TateHindle.

Major transformations of Battersea Power Station and the London Olympic Stadium also feature among the nominees.

London’s restaurant scene is celebrated with various and varied nominations, including The Borough Market Cookhouse by DLA Architects and Chicken Town – a non-profit outlet in a converted fire station created by Assemble Studios.

The most recent project included in the hotel category is The Green Room by SODA, who this month completed their restoration of a 1935 Art Deco building into an arts-led independent social enterprise hotel, providing affordable accommodation.

An exhibition of all the shortlisted schemes will open at the NLA Galleries at The Building Centre in London from 3 June. The category winners and an overall winner will be announced at the NLA Annual Lunch on 7 July.

Additional special awards will be presented, including the New Londoner prize to the person who made a significant contribution to the capital in 2016; the Mayor's Prize for the project that has most creatively contributed to London's economy; and the Ashden Prize, awarded to the most energy efficient project; and a People’s Choice Award voted for by the public.
