Scandinavian design inspires creators of boutique Manhattan hotel
A combination of Scandinavian design and “socially conscious hyperlocalism” has been used for an art-filled new hotel in New York, created by Anda Andrei Design and Danish studio Space Copenhagen.
Located in New York’s artistic SoHo district, the hotel, called 11 Howard, is owned by art collector Aby Rosen and features works from prominent US artists including Jeff Koons and Dan Attoe.
The design team gutted a “characterless” 1960s structure and re-designed the space to reflect the minimalism typical of many Scandinavian buildings. A striking mural by young, unknown artists overseen by Koons was added to the hotel’s south wall as a visual celebration of the culture and history of SoHo.
“More than looking Scandinavian, the hotel embraces Scandinavian ideals – lightness, honesty, utility, and durability,” said Anda Andrei. “With an emphasis on long-term function, in addition to form, 11 Howard is intentionally not trendy; its goal is to endure, and even to improve with time. It’ll never feel dated.”
The interiors have been informed by the Scandinavian principles of light and space. The ceilings of the 211 guest rooms are 11ft high, while oversized windows allow for an abundance of natural light and views of Manhattan. Oak floors and rugs made from soft natural bamboo have been added to create a warm and stylish feel, complemented by custom-made furniture and lighting designed by the architects.
In addition to the rooms, the hotel also has fitness facilities, including a cardio and weight room and a yoga studio. Restaurateur Stephen Starr will open a French restaurant called Le Coucou at the hotel in May 2016 and a bar called The Blond also features.
An events space called The Creative Studio – which contains a silk mural by English painter and fashion designer Holly Fowler – is an intimate dinner space for 14 people, and a cultural hub called The Library provides a co-working space for artists in the neighbourhood.
Explaining why he was drawn to the property, Rosen said: “I love the SoHo that used to be. I still love it because of its architectural importance. I think we add to the neighbourhood because we are not a cookie-cutter hotel.
“We commissioned designers from Denmark renowned for defying habits and employing a sincere personal vision to their design.”
11 Howard is a member of the German group Design Hotels, which represents 290 independent hotels in more than 50 countries worldwide.
