Elevated Skywalk to boost leisure space around historic Kolkata temple

The Skywalk is a concept, rooted in modernity, which acts as a contemporary response to the problems generated over the years
– DFI Architecs

Indian architecture practice Design Forum International have designed a 380m long elevated walkway in Kolkata to regenerate one of the city’s busiest neighbourhoods and bring leisure to the skies.

The Skywalk has been proposed by the city government to separate pedestrians and road traffic around Dakshineshwar Temple, one of the city’s most visited places of worship.

As well as improving ease of movement and safety by creating a new link between the traffic rotary, the railway station and the entrance gates of the temple, the Skywalk will also create a public space for people to rest, eat and socialise with views over the city and the River Ganges.

The project, which is now under construction, is expected to improve the livelihoods of 200 local shopkeepers, who will move their stores from the crowded street level footpath to occupy booths all along the new structure.

The 10.5m wide walkway has been designed with 12 escalators, four elevators and eight staircases to allow devotees and users to embark and disembark.

The foundations of the project have been laid and completion is scheduled for March 2017.
