David Adjaye to address race and architecture at Design Miami

by Lauren Heath-Jones | 06 Dec 2017

David Adjaye will speak on a panel at the thirteenth annual Design Miami international design fair this afternoon (6 December).

The panel, entitled 'Rethinking the City Through Blackness', will explore the relationship between race and architecture.

Panellists including artist Amanda Williams and University of Miami School of Architecture lecturer and designer Germaine Barnes will discuss ‘blackness’ and how it informs their work in architectural theory, urban design, design installations and urbanism.

The panel will be moderated by Milton SF Curry, dean and professor of architecture at the USC School of Architecture.

The show will play host to the Elliman Talks, which return for their third year. A series of educational speeches billed as an "unfiltered examination of the state of contemporary design through a unique and authoritative lense", the Elliman Talks offer insight into issues affecting the industry.

Other speakers include artist Daniel Arsham; Sharon Johnston, partner at Johnston Marklee; Tom Healy, consulting curator at the Brooklyn Museum; Lisa Schiff, president of Schiff Fine Art; and Jill Matteson, director of Innovative Partnerships at the Leonardo DiCaprio foundation.

In addition to the education programme, the show will also feature an exhibition space dedicated to designers, curators, gallerists and collectors from across the globe, and an exhibition space dedicated to the recipient of the 2017 Panerai Design Miami/Visionary Award, Mwabindo School.

Design Miami kicks off today, alongside its sister show Art Basel Miami, and will run until 10 December. There will also be public art installations, satellite shows, show houses and store and museum openings across Miami throughout the course of the show.
