Paddington's 'streamlined, artisanal' Pilgrm Hotel to open this summer
– Jason Catifeoglou, founder and CEO of The Pilgrm
The concepts of “old world design and the glory of British craftsmanship” have inspired the designers of a 73-bedroom hotel that will open in London this summer.
The Pilgrm has been conceived as reinterpretation of the traditional hotel. Despite being located in a historic Victorian building in Norfolk Square, Paddington – with many of the original exterior and interior features retained by design studio 93ft – any items or services that have become “unnecessary to the modern-day traveller” will be removed.
Founded by hoteliers Jason Catifeoglou, Andreas Thrasyvoul and Steph Thrasyvoul, the concept is to provide “a seamless experience by removing perceived barriers between guest and hotel”, such as the lobby.
Guests will check in online prior to arrival, removing the need for a reception desk or a traditional hotel lobby. Instead, they will enter through a ground floor neighbourhood café integrated into the community.
The design philosophy behind the new brand is steeped in a celebration of craftsmanship. The bedrooms will feature reclaimed and restored furnishings, from 200-year-old mahogany parquet floors to original cast iron radiators, offset by a signature Tom Dixon ‘cloud carpet’.
Reclaimed chevron wooden flooring and vintage cornicing and moulds feature in the 30-seat Q lounge bar and dining room, located on the first floor.
“We will combine the finest guest experience of today, with the finest British craftsmanship of yesterday,” said Catifeoglou, who is the new brand’s CEO. “The Pilgrm represents the journey of a collective of individuals I've enjoyed knowing over the years. Together we present a new luxury to today's traveller, often from unexpected places.”
The multimillion pound refurbishment will be completed in the next few month. The owners hope the hotel is ideally positioned to benefit from the arrival of the Crossrail network to Paddington in 2018, as well as other urban developments taking place in the surrounding area – such as Renzo Piano’s proposed Paddington Cube.
