Want to learn architecture from Frank Gehry? Design icon launches US$90 online course
– Frank Gehry
Budding architects will soon be able to receive tuition from none other than Frank Gehry, who has agreed to organise a new online master class.
The Canadian-American architect – best known for his postmodern buildings, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao – will deliver at least 15 video lessons sharing his design philosophy using case studies, sketches and models.
The course, organised by education platform MasterClass, will cost US$90 to participate in. A downloadable workbook will accompany the class with lesson recaps and assignments, and Gehry will critique select student work.
'I have tried to give the students insight into my process – how and why I did things. I hope this gives them the wings to explore and the courage to create their own language,' said Gehry.
In a statement, MasterClass said: “At 19 years old, Frank Gehry was a truck driver taking sculpture classes at night school. His vision for what architecture could accomplish went on to reshape our cities’ skylines, and the imaginations of artists and designers around the world.
“Now this master builder invites you into his never-before-seen model archive for a look into his creative process.”
The company offers “affordable, engaging and inspirational” online courses curated by leading instructors. For a fee, you can learn about acting from Kevin Spacey or Dustin Hoffman, singing from Christina Aguilera, photography from Annie Leibovitz and tennis from Serena Williams.
Forthcoming Gehry projects include a mixed-use complex on LA’s Sunset Boulevard and the high street for London’s redeveloped Battersea Power Station district.
