Historic house of Dutch playwright integrated into Europe’s first Kimpton hotel

The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the first Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant outside of the Americas will open in the first quarter of 2017, featuring “a house within a hotel” for private groups.

Amsterdam is the location for the hotel, with architects Kentie en Partners and design firm Michaelis Boyd Associates appointed to renovate and refurbish three original Renaissance-era buildings located close to the city’s central station.

When finished, the property will feature 274 guest rooms, including 15 signature rooms and suites and eight meeting rooms.

The most innovative design aspect is the four storey ‘Little House’ – once the childhood home of Dutch playwright, P.C. Hooft – which dates back to the 1500s. Featuring its own guest rooms and bar, it has been incorporated into the Kimpton and can be rented privately for groups.

The Kimpton also features a flower shop and a coffee house to integrate it with the community.

Tom Rowntree, a vice president at IHG, said: “It’s perfect that the first Kimpton to open outside of the Americas is within Europe, as this is the continent that inspired Bill Kimpton to found the brand.

The hotel has merged the features that make staying at a Kimpton so memorable together with the playful side of Amsterdam’s culture and we can’t wait for guests to be able to experience it.”

IHG has 662 properties in Europe, and the Kimpton will be its twentieth hotel in the Netherlands. Continuing the brand’s expansion within Europe, last year the operator announced it has signed a deal to open a Kimpton in Paris, set to open in 2020.
