Mateusz Tanski's competition-winning Polish sports centre will resemble a scattered pile of rocks
Warsaw architecture studio Mateusz Tanski & Associates have won a design competition in Poland to build a stadium, sports and culture complex nestled in a quarry in the city of Jaworzno.
The design is inspired by the rich geological landscape of the region. The complex will be formed of a 1,000-capacity athletics stadium designed to resemble a rock and six free-standing buildings evoking scattered boulders. The shape of the structures and the materials used will integrate the complex with the vast quarry walls that surround it.
“Since the beginning we thought about the environment of the site and how the sports centre could fit,” Mateusz Tanski told CLAD. “We were determined to integrate the project with the nature, and that was our biggest inspiration in designing these stone-shaped elements.”
The stadium will host local and regional track and field events and training camps, and the other buildings – covering a built-up area of 4,200sq m (45,200sq ft) – will host further sports facilities, restaurants, exhibition space and high-end hotels for tourists, spectators and athletes.
Construction on the stadium will begin by the end of 2016, with a phase one budget of 10m zloty (US$2.5m, €2.3m, £1.8m). Private and public investment is currently being sought for construction on the six buildings to follow after.
“The project will be important for Jaworzno,” said Tanski. “When the city ran the competition, they didn't want something simple. They invited architects from all over the country to think of new and exciting ideas. They're planning something that will interest people all over Poland and Europe.”
