Global developer and operator of wellbeing destinations Therme Group has inked a deal with Peel L&P for a new location in Glasgow called Therme Scotland.

Headquartered in Austria, Therme has announced it aims to submit planning permission to Glasgow City Council in 2022 for the 320,000sq ft facility which will be home to extensive thermal pools and spa, a health and wellbeing centre and an indoor water park.

The organisation anticipates the project will cost roughly £100m (€118.2m, US$134.3m) to create.

Situated on a waterfront site in the city centre, the Glasgow location will be constructed on the Peel L&P 21.5-acre site adjacent to the Riverside Museum, at the intersection of the Kelvin and Clyde rivers.

If the application is successful, Therme Scotland will be the organisation’s second wellbeing destination in the UK, joining the £250m (€295.5m, US$335.8m) Therme Manchester project scheduled to open in 2023, also on a site owned by Peel L&P.

Additional elements of the Scottish project also include botanical gardens and a vertical farm, which will enable sustainable and locally-sourced, nutrient-rich fresh produce to be grown for Therme visitors.

In addition, the group is investigating the possibility of using renewable heat sources, considering both geothermal energy and water source heat pumps.

Therme will work with local stakeholders to create schemes for people with health challenges and from all backgrounds to access Therme Scotland at reduced rates and experience the wellbeing benefits it brings.

Located between the University of Glasgow, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and the city centre, Therme Scotland will partner with academic experts on multi-disciplinary research to maximise the health and wellbeing benefits delivered to the community.

Stelian Iacob, senior vice-president of Therme and CEO of Therme Group UK, says: “The primary purpose of Therme projects is to benefit the communities they serve.

“This is achieved both as a direct result of the Therme experience and by acting as a catalyst for wider activities around biodiversity, cultural inclusion, urban greening and more. These projects are also key drivers of post-Covid economic, social and environmental recovery.

“Therme Scotland will create a fun and accessible experience with profound health and wellbeing benefits for all. We look forward to engaging with the Glasgow community as we progress with the design and development of Therme Scotland.”

Therme’s urban wellbeing resort concept has been based in Europe for more than 20 years, but now the group is reaching further afield and rolling out a global development programme, with active projects already under development in Toronto and Frankfurt.

The group has also identified targets to create five major wellbeing resorts across major cities both in the UK and North America respectively.
