Guggenheim deputy director resigns to start new family design studio

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation’s deputy director is to step down from his role in order to launch a new independent design studio with his brother.
Ari Wiseman, who took up his role in January 2010, will start the studio with artist brother David, which will be dedicated to the creation and exhibition of projects with galleries, museums and other artists; and programmes that foster dialogue about design and nature.
The Wiseman Studio will also take over a former factory complex in Los Angeles to showcase David’s creations and examine his working process. The 30,000sq ft (2,800sq m) building will be designed by Ryall Porter Sheridan Architects’ Ted Porter and is expected to be completed in early 2018.
Ari began his museum career in 1998 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where he served as assistant and then senior assistant for acquisitions until 2001. He then joined Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, holding a number of positions including deputy director. He also provided continuity and leadership during the museum’s period with an interim director between 2008 and 2009.
The Guggenheim now has two major positions to fill, with Wiseman’s departure following that of former chief curator Nancy Spector, who moved to the Brooklyn Museum in 2015.
