Boris Johnson throws his support behind Eden Project North in Morecambe
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has thrown his weight behind plans to build an Eden Project North visitor attraction in the Lancashire seaside town of Morecambe.
A planning application for the £125m project was submitted to Lancaster City Council in September, with a view to having the attraction open in 2024.
In a LinkedIn post, Grimshaw – the architect firm behind the design of the original biomes at Eden Project Cornwall – revealed that Johnson had told company chair Andrew Whalley at a reception in New York that the company "must build the Eden Project at Morecambe".
Eden Project North is being delivered by the team behind the first Eden Project in Cornwall, alongside a team of local partners including Lancaster University, Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership.
It is one of the key projects in Eden’s plans to expand around the UK and the world.
Eden Project North will combine indoor and outdoor experiences, connecting people with the internationally-significant natural environment of Morecambe Bay while also enhancing wellbeing.
Building on the Eden Project Cornwall’s particular mix of entertainment and education, Eden Project North will combine exhibits, performance, learning, play, immersive experiences, horticulture, live music, art, food, beverage and retail spaces.
In May this year, Eden Project also signed a memorandum of understanding for another site in Dundee, Scotland, while the company is also working on projects around the world, including China.
