Treehouse restaurant made from beach materials opens at secluded Greek resort

Milanese studio CTRLZAK Art & Design have created a restaurant in the trees for a secluded Greek beach resort.

The Treehouse, which can cater for ten diners per evening, was built using local materials sustainably sourced from Greece's Halkidiki beach region. The flooring has been rendered from pine wooden planks and naturally rusted iron was used for the railings and supporting structure.

The restaurant is cocooned by a Inox fabric – a newly-developed material weaved on a loom – that creates a mesh that alters in colour depending on the direction of the sun’s rays.

“We took inspiration from the natural wonders surrounding the resort,” said CTRLZAK’s Katia Meneghini. “From the Mediterranean pine trees to the tiny organisms that are found in their branches.”

The restaurant was commissioned for the Ekies All Senses Resort on Vourvourou Beach, which has just been renovated, also using natural unrefined materials. The design concept, “to stimulate and soothe the soul”, is inspired by the beach’s rocky islets, secluded caves, crystal waters, and pine tree forests and features numerous organic forms.

The 69 rooms and suites weave Greek traditional features with minimalist design, unexpected bursts of colour and custom-designed illustrations.

"The Ekies family set out to reflect the soul of Greece through design, art installations, architecture, and lots of fun surprises,” said owner Alexandra Efstathiadou, who has spent nine years transforming the resort. “It’s a place filled with love.”

Designers and resort operators are increasingly turning to treehouses for their leisure amenities. This year has already seen the opening of a treehouse sauna in Britain’s Sherwood Forest and a Snøhett-designed Treehotel in Sweden offering clear views of the Northern Lights, while Danish architects EFFEKT are developing a 600m long, two-tier elevated Treetop Experience around a protected forest near Copenhagen.

The Ekies All Senses Resort is represented by the Design Hotels Group, which has a portfolio of 90 independent design-led hotels in more than 60 countries.
