Radical Innovation Award organisers seek groundbreaking hospitality design concepts
– John Hardy, founder of Radical Innovation
Radical Innovation, an annual competition that calls for the “best and brightest” concept ideas in hospitality design, is seeking entries for its 2018 edition.
Professionals and students alike are encouraged to submit creative proposals via the Radical Innovation Award website by April 30 to be in with the chance of winning a US$10,000 (€8,100, £7,100) prize and the chance to make their vision a reality.
Last year fiver concepts were awarded, including an eco-conscious treetop resort and a Hyperloop Hotel composed of shipping containers that double as hotel rooms.
The 2015 winner, ZOKU, was a work-live hybrid hotel that opened for real the following year in Amsterdam. Design brand Muuto and creative firm Concrete created public spaces that double as work, meeting and networking zones.
According to the competition roles, “in addition to a clear and compelling brief, all entries should be accompanied by a professional quality presentation including design renderings illustrating how the concept could be achieved in the next 3-5 years.”
A panel of jurors leading the fields of hospitality, design and investment – including the head of co-working space WeWork James Woods and former Disney architect and executive Wing T. Chao – will then evaluate the entries based on their originality, creativity, design and potential impact on the industry.
Several finalists will be selected and mentored by the jury, before presenting their ideas at a live event in New York. An audience of hospitality, design and business leaders determining the grand-prize winner.
The runner-up will receive a US$5,000 prize, while the student winner will earn US$1,500 and be offered a graduate assistantship in the Masters of Architecture programme at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
“We’re in the business of rewarding creative thinkers who dare to dream big with a passion to anchor their ideas in the real world,” said John Hardy, founder of Radical Innovation and CEO of real estate firm The John Hardy Group. “We don’t simply want a brave idea; we want an achievable vision.”
Since launching in 2006, over US$150,000 has been presented “to progressive architectural and hospitality-minded thinkers” by Radical Innovation.
