Margot Krasojević combines gallery and hydropower typologies

This architecture does not solely blend in a submissive manner with the elements but also defines their movements to produce clean energy
– Margot Krasojević

Margot Krasojević has created a conceptual design for a hydroelectric power plant that uses the electricity it generates to power nearby homes as well as an art gallery housed within.

Much of Krasojević's work focuses on combining architectural typologies as potential solutions for new challenges in our "perpetually changing environment", like her Harmonic Turbine Tidal Hotel.

The Hydroelectric Sculpture Gallery concept redefines what a power plant and a gallery can be.

It is designed to harness the strong swell of the Black Sea in Sochi, Russia, on the coast of which it would be situated, to generate electricity using the oscillating water column principle employed by many hydropower plants.

The building would be cantilevered over the coastline and partly submerged to maximise exposure to the wave energy and the potential for power generation.

Krasojević suggests the plant would be capable of producing up to 300kW of power and supplying energy for up to 200 households.

The art gallery would be woven into the structure of the plant, housed in two open-plan spaces connected by walkways and ramps.

Seawater drawn up into the oscillating water column to drive the turbines would be splashed onto the roof of the art gallery, adding an additional element of interest for visitors and manifesting the combined typology.

"This architecture does not solely blend in a submissive manner with the elements but also defines their movements to produce clean energy," explained Krasojević. "It is not simply a subtle design for a static environment but it rather engages with nature’s forces. This has always been the intention in making renewable energy the motivation behind the design."
