PES-Architects scoop futuristic Turku revitalisation project

by Andrew Manns | 08 Nov 2018

Finnish studio PES-Architects have won a competition to design what’s been described as a "future-oriented" urban "archipelago" in Turku, Finland.

Dubbed "Luoto" (skerry), the estimated €500m (US$571m, £435m) project will see the coastal city gain a 170,000 sq m experience centre, which will include a multipurpose sports arena, hotel, chapel, residences, and office space, as well a number of entertainment and retail facilities.

The new destination, which PES says will offer "out-of-the-ordinary experiences" will be built around the Turku railyard and will form a link to the Logomo cultural centre, an events complex which first came to global prominence when the city was named the European Capital of Culture in 2011.

Speaking on the upcoming centre, musician and competition adviser Lauri Ylönen said it would "attract people from sports fans to architecture" and stand as an example for future cities.

Similarly, Turku City Board Chair Lauri Kattelus called it a forward-looking "attractive and experiential entity".

The project – which is anticipated to be completed in 2022 – is being developed by Turun Ratapihan Kehitys and the national railway operator VR Group, in cooperation with the city of Turku.
