Francis Ford Coppola creates 'Robinson Crusoe' experience on private Caribbean island

Legendary Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola has opened a private Caribbean island, transforming a former fishing camp in Belize into a “Robinson Crusoe experience”.

The remote two-acre Coral Caye island is sheltered behind the Belize Barrier Reef, eight miles, and a 25 minute boat journey, from Coppola’s Turtle Inn resort.

Coppola has built one new cottage dwelling on the island, added a camp site and renovated an existing house and cottage, to create accommodation for up to twelve people.

The new structure has been built in a rustic style, with “airy fabrics, open space, seaside-inspired colours, beachy accents, sturdy woods to withstand sandy feet and salty air, and tones to reflect the sea and sky.”

Amenities in the island’s existing Great House include a full bar, kitchen and dining room. Al-fresco massage and spa treatments can be provided, and a private chef and butler can be requested.

Coppola, whose films include The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, owns a number of resorts, restaurants and a winery in Italy, Belize, Guatemala and Argentina.
