World's largest touring videogame exhibition comes to Canada

The Barbican’s touring videogame exhibition, Game On, has come to Canada for the first time, with the installation at Montreal Science Centre becoming the country’s largest ever videogame exhibition.

The using 10,000sq ft (929sq m) world's largest touring videogame exhibition, which has travelled to 23 cities worldwide, looks at the history of videogames and the wider industry. The exhibtion is divided into nine zones exploring the design process through to the finished product, as well as the cultural influence of videogames around the word and the impact they have on society. As part of the exhibition, visitors can try their hand at more than 100 videogames, dating back to the first videogame Pong all the way up to next-gen releases such as Destiny. Game On also looks at legendary videogame franchises such as the Final Fantasy series, Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong.

The exhibition, organised and toured by the Barbican Art Gallery, always offers an exclusive feature for its locations. For Montréal, the science centre looks at Montreal-based videogame developer Ubisoft with a 65 foot (19.8 meter) wall piece highlighting professions in the field and the science behind the games.

"Montreal is recognised today as a global capital in the video game industry,” said Science Centre director, Julie Payette. “In presenting Game On at the Science Centre, we celebrate this success as well as relive its history and pave the way to the future.

"Ubisoft Montreal is not just a global industry leader, it's also a company with strong roots in our city. We are very proud to partner with Ubisoft to promote technological professions among young people."

The exhibition is now underway and will remain at the science centre until 13 September. First launched in London’s Barbican Art Gallery in 2002, Game On has been seen by more than one million people worldwide. On 23 May an alternate version of the exhibition, Game On 2.0, will come to Newcastle, England’s, Life Science Centre, running until 1 November 2015.
