US baseball team the LA Dodgers announce improvements to stadium

by Jessica Tasman-Jones | 18 Jan 2013

The Los Angeles Dodgers have this month announced plans to upgrade their 51-year-old stadium in time for the 2013 season.

Improvements will include high definition video boards, Wi-Fi, increased disability access, new food service facilities, a new home clubhouse, new batting cages, and a new sound system that will minimise echoes and sound migration outside the stadium.

Dodger president and chief executive Stan Kansten said the stadium would retain its classic look but with a more comfortable feel.

"Dodger Stadium is a treasured piece of the Los Angeles community and we will respect that heritage while restoring and enhancing the venue for our fans in the 21st century."

Dodgers vice president of planning and improvements Janet Marie Smith - who has already worked on stadiums for the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves - will oversee the planned improvements.

Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the improvements to the "civic icon" would help attract new fans.

"Dodger Stadium is a jewel in the heart of Los Angeles. It's a place where Angelenos from all walks of life have come together for decades."
