Large indoor ski project planned for Denmark
Denmark is the latest Scandinavian country to propose an indoor ski resort.
The Skidome Denmark project, to be based in the city of Randers, proposes more than 3kms (1.8m) of indoor and outdoor slopes and a freestyle park. There are also plans for a hotel, restaurant and retail outlets on an area of just over 1m sq ft (93 000sq m).
Danish architectural firm, CEBRA were responsible for the design of the project which was commissioned by leading Danish ski travelling agency, Danski.
The structure consists of three arches, which resemble the shape of a six-armed snowflake. The arches span 700m (2,296sq ft) across the Gudenåen River with the top arch's highest point rising 110m (361 ft) over the surrounding landscape. The interior slopes will have real snow, while the top arch's roof will offer two black pistes allowing outdoor skiing even during summer months.
There will also be a middle arch shaped like an urban playground with street sport facilities for activities such as skateboarding and BMX, while the bottom arch has a green landscaped roof.
According to Danski, the hotel will be situated in the bottom arch while the top arch will house the restaurant.
The company did not offer details on a start date or budget as the project was still in its infancy.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Sweden, construction is underway to build Skipark 360 Degrees in Bålsta. Its downhill slope will reportedly be 700m (2,296 ft) long with a drop of 160m (524 ft).
