'Chimney lift' and large events space planned for Battersea Power Station
Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) has released details of three new attractions planned for the iconic London building, which is currently under renovation.
The additions will include a large events venue, a 109 metre-high glass elevator which travels up one of the famous chimneys and a 250-person capacity immersive space in a former control room.
All three spaces will open as part of the second phase of the building's redevelopment, which is set to complete in Q4 2020.
The venue area will have a series of interconnected rooms and a 1,500-person capacity main space called the Event Box. It will hold cultural events including live music, product launches, fashion shows and conferences.
The Chimney Lift, meanwhile, will travel up the north-west chimney via a custom-built glass elevator to a viewing platform, offering panoramic views across London.
Finally, Control Room A will hold events separately or in conjunction with the Event Box inside a 1930s Art Deco interior to mimic the power station’s exterior.
“On behalf of our shareholders, we are very excited to announce a series of thrilling lifestyle, entertainment and attraction spaces, and to launch our search for commercial partners who share our vision for Battersea Power Station,” said Andrew Hilston, head of leasing at BPSDC.
“Having already engaged with a number of prospective partners, we are confident the market shares our enthusiasm for the new spaces, and we’re looking forward to selecting partners that can deliver real vibrancy, animation and soul to the development.”
The renovation of Battersea Power Station is now in its second phase, following the completion of the Circus West Village first phase. More than 1,000 residents have moved into the residential area, while over one million people have visited the restaurants, shops, bars and leisure facilities that have opened in the space, which opened in Q2 2017.
