Shangri-La Bengaluru takes design inspiration from India's Garden City

by Jane Kitchen | 24 Sep 2015

The 397-bedroom Shangri-La Bengaluru has opened in Bangalore, India, with traditional Indian motifs and interiors.

Designed by Adarsh Design Studio in Bangalore and with interior design by Singapore-based Wilson Associates, the 19-storey Shangri-La Hotel, Bangalore features an impressive 9m (30ft) high lobby with nine cylindrical chandeliers – each weighing nearly half a ton – as well as imposing marble columns with intricate Indian motifs.

The interiors reference Bangalore (known as the Garden City) with tiles, carpets and wood-carved screens with abstract floral silhouettes. A sandstone wall installation sourced in Rajasthan depicts a gold-stained palm leaf pattern.

Guest rooms feature tufted leather headboards and locally sourced New Gold Vein marble, and the hotel’s 30 suites are decorated in shades of gold, plum and green.

The hotel also includes a nine-treatment room Chi The Spa with a dedicated ayurveda room.

The entire third floor of the hotel is designed as a fully-equipped wellness floor, and in addition to the spa, includes a health club, sauna, steamroom and whirlpool.

The spa’s entrance features a brass sculpture, fashioned to resemble a blooming flower and flaming sun, while treatments are a fusion of chi techniques and ayurveda treatments, inspired by the seven chakras and the five elements of the body.

Spa suites and treatment rooms include their own private bath, shower, steam, relaxation lounge and changing and vanity areas. A dedicated ayurveda room offers a host of ayurvedic treatments, including Udhwartana, Shirodhara, Pinda and Sweda, and the spa also includes a VIP couples suite.

The spa’s interior showcases curated Asian artefacts, warm woods and specially designed ambient lighting.

Other wellness activities at the hotel include weekly yoga sessions and the Run Well programme – a running tour of nearby Bangalore Palace or Cubbon Park, accompanied by a health club associate.

Shangri-La also recently opened a new hotel with a Chi The Spa in Hefei, China.
