New designs for Pompey stadium revealed

Portsmouth Football Club and developers Sellar Property Group have unveiled new designs for a proposed 36,000-seater stadium on Horsea Island.

The announcement comes after plans for a stadium on another site, The Hard, were scrapped in November following security concerns from the Royal Navy, which operates a base next to the site.

If the planning application is approved, work on the project could begin in 2009 and construction of the new stadium the following year. The Blues could be playing in the new £100m stadium at the start of the 2011-12 season.

Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron—designers of the Beijing National Stadium—have had to rework the stadium’s original design slightly.

Aside from the 36,000-seater stadium, plans include a standalone indoor exhibition centre/arena with an all-seater capacity of 10,000.

A new Naval diving and training facility is also planned, along with a mix of complimentary low-rise retail, leisure and residential uses and access roads.

The stadium’s capacity could be raised by 9,000 seats if England wins the right to host the World Cup in 2018 and Portsmouth is selected as a host city.

Pompey and Sellar have also announced plans for the redevelopment of the football club’s 17-acre Fratton Park site, which will contain a mix of low-rise residential and retail uses.

The project will be developed in phases beginning while the club is still playing at Fratton Park.

Pompey said in a statement that the two developments will create several thousand jobs, with many hundreds of permanent jobs remaining after completion.

The football club and Sellar have formed a joint venture to keep ownership of Fratton Park and the new stadium. The residential and commercial elements of both schemes will help fund the development.

“The design for [The Hard] was quite spectacular and I have to say I didn’t think Herzog & de Meuron could beat that. But I think the new design is even better,” said Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie.

“The club will be playing a big part in the regeneration of the city and our fans will have the very best in terms of amenities as well as an excellent viewing experience,” he said.

“We were extremely disappointed that the previous project couldn’t go forward, but actually I think the new site has a lot more opportunities,” said Herzog & de Meuron architect Jayne Barlow. “It’s still going to be on the waterfront but it will also be a chance to create an icon at the gateway to the city.”
