New Hamburg train station looks to be hybrid between ‘nature and city life’
A new railway station development in Hamburg, Germany, has been commissioned, with a view to the hub being more than just another stop on the tracks but indeed an architectural representation of the green credentials of the city around it.
Hamburg-Altona station will house a rooftop green space and two towers on that roofscape, as well as cafés, restaurants, shops, fitness facilities, bicycle parking, waiting areas and entrance lobbies at its base.
“Conceptually, the project is a compilation of three primary elements: a base, a roofscape and two towers,” said a statement. "The base gathers the project's public and urban attributes". Meanwhile the two towers accommodate a hotel and office spaces with views across Hamburg and the roof element will house a park.
The roof will provide a canopy for many outdoor public functions below, such as farmer’s markets.
German designers C.F. Møller Architects won a competition to take charge of the station’s design. 13 firms in total submitted proposals to the City of Hamburg, the development company ProHa Altona and Deutsche Bahn Station & Service and the list was whittled down to C.F. Møller and Austrian architect Baumschlager Eberle as finalists.
Mads Mandrup Hansen, partner and architect at C.F. Møller said: "We are really proud that our design has been selected. The project will be a beacon in the future development of the Diebsteich quarter. Our vision is to connect the station, city quarter, hotel and office building with a distinctive green profile, which reflects the green focus of the city of Hamburg.”
No construction or completion dates have yet been released.
