Lego News: Merlin announces it will build a Lego waterpark at AED10bn Dubai mega resort
Merlin Entertainments – which is already building a Legoland theme park as part of the Dubai Parks and Resorts development in the UAE – has announced that the AED10bn (US$2.7bn, €2.5bn, £1.8bn) mega-development will also include a Lego waterpark. Lego is the number one global brand in 2015.
The new Lego waterpark will include a wave pool, a Build-A-Raft River and Imagination Station – where guests can construct Lego bridges, dams and cities and test their designs against the flow of water.
Legoland Dubai, announced in October 2014, will include 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions in the park’s six areas; Lego City, Adventure, Lego Kingdom, Create, Lego Factory, and the magical Miniland. Legoland Dubai has a projected target of 6.7 million ticketed visits in 2017.
In addition to Legoland Dubai, the first phase of Dubai Parks & Resorts will also include two other theme parks – Motiongate Dubai and Bollywood Parks Dubai – along with hotels, resorts and mixed use developments. The project, backed by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is part of plans to bring 20 million visitors to Dubai on an annual basis by 2020 – the year the city will host the 2020 World Expo.
“We look forward to welcoming families to this immersive and interactive attraction, where children can create, build, and learn while having fun,” said Raed Al Nuaimi, CEO of Dubai Parks and Resorts. “With the addition of the Legoland waterpark to our existing offering, we will now have a destination that boasts six major parks which together have over 100 rides and attractions.”
Merlin Entertainments is continuing its global roll out, having broken ground earlier this month on Legoland Japan in Nagoya, Japan and with a multitude of other developments on site or in the pipeline. Merlin is the second biggest theme park operator globally after Disney.
