3XN Architects-led team secures Copenhagen Arena design contract

A team led by Denmark-based 3XN Architects has won an international design competition for the development of a new indoor arena complex in the Ørestad area of Copenhagen.
HKS Architects, Arup, ME Engineers and Planit also form part of the team, with the facility to be divided into a plinth and a top under the successful Copenhagen Arena proposals.
The design of the plinth element allows for the creation of a number of spaces and niches to be used for recreational purposes and for regulating the movement of spectators.
Meanwhile, the top of the 35,000sq m (376,737sq ft) building will boast a semi-transparent façade with yellow terracotta and glass allowing natural light to reach the foyer.
Due for completion during the second half of 2015, the arena will be able to cater for 15,000 people standing or 12,500 seated depending on the type of event.
3XN partner and creative director Kim Herforth Nielsen said: "Our ambition was to create an arena, that besides from hosting a range of amazing sporting and musical events would also be a catalyst for various local activities for the enjoyment of residents and visitors."
Two other teams - CF Møller, Grimshaw, Arup, Niras and Marianne Levinsen and Foster + Partners, Arkitektfirmaet 78 and Arup - were also invited to take part in the finals of the invited competition.
