£100m Anglesey proposals rejected

Councillors have voted against proposals, put forward by developer Ynys Mon Estates, for a new £100m shopping and leisure complex at Ty Mawr on Anglesey, north Wales.

Plans for the 55-acre (22.3-hectare) development near Llanfairpwll were rejected by Anglesey Council last week despite planning officers recommending the scheme for approval. As part of the project, Ynys Mon Estates intends to create 98,000sq ft (9,105sq m) of leisure space, including a Cineworld multiplex, a ten-pin bowling alley and a health and fitness centre. Restaurants and cafes had also been earmarked for the site.

The Ty Mawr complex had also been designed to reflect the heritage and culture of Anglesey, with water features and a nature park incorporated into the proposals, as well as pedestrian and cycle ways. A spokesperson for Anglesey Council said, however, that because the decision was a 'departure' from the recommendations of planning officers, there will be a one-month cooling-off period before the plans reappear before the full council again in January.
