Banyan Tree curating solar-powered wellness retreat on private Mozambican island

by Megan Whitby | 25 Jan 2022

Two Asian-inspired wellness sanctuaries crafted by Banyan Tree will open on luxury private islands off the coast of Mozambique in Q4 2022.

The first, a signature Banyan Tree spa, will open at Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira – a new private island getaway.

The resort will be joined by a sister island named Banyan Tree Veya Ilha Nejovo, dedicated to wellness and wellbeing. This adults-only 20-villa wellness destination will be located in the same archipelago as Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira and be reachable by boat.

Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira>

The upcoming island resort is being built with a focus on sustainability, a central pillar of Banyan Tree’s philosophy. It will be set on a previously uninhabited tropical island within the marine reserve of the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago.

The 40-key resort will be 100 per cent solar-powered, recruit directly from local communities and have its own desalination plant to provide sustainable drinking water.

To realise this development, Banyan Tree has partnered with South African entrepreneur Jack Truter.

For Truter, this project is the culmination of a lifelong dream of building an island resort off the coast of Mozambique. He has recently been given special rights by the Mozambican government to build the destination.

The team’s joint goal is to develop a destination blending barefoot luxury and a globally recognised philosophy of wellbeing and sustainability with the vibrancy of African culture and hospitality.

Accommodation will consist of 40 private ocean-facing pool villas, while dining opportunities will include a 270º ocean-view fish and seafood market restaurant, an all-day dining restaurant and in-villa or destination dining options.

The resort’s spa will offer an island wellness escape for guests and feature four double treatment rooms as well as a single garden treatment room.

Facilities will include a hydrotherapy pool, fitness and wellness centre, yoga pavilion and beauty salon.

Additional resort facilities are a Marine Conservation Centre, diving school, ocean-front infinity school, helipad, gallery, wine cellar with private dining room and kids club.

More about Banyan TreeFounded in 1994 on the core concept of sustainability, Banyan Tree seeks to create long-term value for all stakeholders and destinations across its network of properties, products and brands, through a purpose-driven mission.

Banyan Tree entered a strategic long-term partnership with Accor in 2016 to develop and manage Banyan Tree-branded hotels around the world along with the access to Accor’s global reservations and sales network, as well as the loyalty programme ALL – Accor Live Limitless.

It also formed a joint venture with China Vanke Co Ltd. in 2017 – focusing on active ageing and wellness hospitality projects.

The group now encompasses a portfolio of 49 hotels spread through 14 countries, as well as a development pipeline of 43 new hotels and resorts.
