Gurney’s Montauk announces completion of US$20m spa renovation
– George Filopoulos
Gurney’s Montauk Resort in Long Island, US, has relaunched its Seawater Spa following a US$20m top-to-toe refresh focused on holistic wellness, innovation and sustainability.
What’s new?
The Gurney’s team tapped architecture firm Alonso Designs to realise the renovation – the group responsible for creating Manhattan’s popular Aire Ancient Baths destination.
Spa development firm TLEE Spas also joined the project in its latter stage to create the spa concept and menu, while fine-tuning facility planning to optimise efficiency and operational finesse.
The main objective was to ensure the new spa complemented its waterfront location, complete with views of the Atlantic and a 2,000ft private beach stretch.
In line with this, the 30,000sq ft space was updated with ocean-view treatment rooms as well as dedicated outdoor spaces for seaside spa-ing.
Interiors have received a comprehensive refresh inspired by the resort’s surroundings and crafted to evoke a sense of calm. The team decided to work with natural materials and tones, playing into the colours and textures of the beach.
To further underscore the connection to the ocean, all spa pools and bodies of water now feature a custom-designed infinity drain that blurs the edge between the ocean and spa water.
Meanwhile, the resort’s existing saltwater swimming pool fed by the Atlantic was renovated and complemented with four new ocean-view experiences – a large caldarium, thermae and a dual frigidarium.
Sustainability also played into the master plan with Gurney’s Resorts and Alonso Designs sourcing and installing new environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mechanical and water treatment systems for the spa.
“We’re very excited to bring the new Seawater Spa to our guests, members and community, allowing access to a level of facilities, treatments and amenities not previously available in Montauk,” said George Filopoulos, owner of Gurney’s Resorts.
“After the challenges of the past couple of years, we’ve learned how important prioritising wellness is, and we’re happy to bring this completely elevated experience to the Hamptons.”
The final part of the refresh included the introduction of a new event space – named The Spa Deck. Created on the panoramic rooftop of the Seawater Spa, the private venue offers unobstructed ocean views.
Guests can complete their journey at the new spa by visiting new co-ed relaxation areas, an indoor/outdoor fitness space featuring cardio and weight equipment, a movement studio or areas for activities.
Treatment partnersThe new spa menu offers a variety of treatments supplied by Biologique Recherche, OSEA, QMS Medicosmetics and Voya. The facility also serves as an outpost for skincare brand Dennis Gross and provides the brand’s bespoke facials and skincare treatments.
All spa bookings include access to the pools and bathhouse facilities.
In addition, guests can explore a retail boutique and purchase the products and technology used during treatments for ongoing maintenance at home, along with exercise apparel, and more.
Spa memberships
To coincide with the relaunch, the resort unveiled exclusive spa memberships for guests and locals to benefit from unlimited access to the new wellness sanctuary.
Spa members also receive one-on-one fitness coaching and wellness classes and curated spa treatments.
Memberships start at US$17,500 (€16,614, £14,033) each.
