Bletchley Park and Eltham Palace's immersive LGBTQ+ show among winners of UK Heritage Awards
The home of British codebreaking, Bletchley Park has been named among the winners of this year's UK Heritage Awards – alongside an immersive performance charting LGBTQ+ heritage.
Bletchley Park was named winner of the Must Visit award and also took home the Best of Heritage prize.
Eltham Palace won the Best Event, Festival or Exhibition award for its "Our House" theatre performance, which explored LGBTQ+ heritage and the history of the palace in south-east London, where it was performed.
In their assessment, the awards' judges said: "The Our House show promotes diversity and youth and is an engaging theatre show within a historic site.
"The performance is tasteful, sensitive, charming and very touching. Really well put together and produced."
Elsewhere, the Birdoswald Roman Fort in Cumbria – an English Heritage flagship family-friendly site, created using the Kids in Museums principles – was named winner of the Best Family Day Out award.
Now in their 20th year, the awards are organised by destination marketing company Visit Heritage and celebrate the best historic houses, gardens, museums and sites around the UK across 12 categories.
Other winners included Broughton Hall (Wonderful Place to Stay award), Winchester Cathedral (Most Improved Heritage Development), the Accessing Aidan Project (Hidden Gem award), The Goodwood Estate (Outstanding Customer Service award) and the 'Speaking with Shadows' podcast by English Heritage (Contribution to Heritage award).
