DCMS adds digital to name in rebranding

As its remit evolves, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has changed its name, now to be known as the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Still referred to as the DCMS, digital has been added to the department’s name to acknowledge the ever-increasing impact of digital on core areas including arts, culture, the creative industries, sport, tourism, heritage and gambling.

“DCMS celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and it is fitting now to include Digital in the name,” said culture secretary Karen Bradley.

“The department has taken on significant new responsibilities in recent years, so that half of its policy and delivery work now covers the digital sectors – telecommunications, data protection, internet safety, cyber skills and parts of media and the creative industries.”

The DCMS underwent a shakeup recently when Rob Wilson, former minister for civil society, lost his seat during the general election.

As a result John Glen was handed the role of parliamentary undersecretary for arts, heritage and tourism, while Tracey Crouch took over the duties of Wilson as parliamentary undersecretary for sport and civil society. Former minister for culture and digital Matt Hancock narrowed his remit, which now focuses purely on digital, with arts and culture now falling under the watch of Glen.
