Pyeongchang 2018 organisers scale back Paralympic cost with venue change

by Matthew Campelli | 04 Jan 2017

Alpine skiing and snowboarding events taking place at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics will now share a venue as Games organisers attempt to scale back costs.

Both disciplines will take place at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre after plans to host the giant slalom, slalom and snowboarding events at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre were scrapped.

Games organisers said the consolidation would “create considerable cost savings” for the Pyeongchang Organising Committee (POCOG), with the number of staff reduced from 682 to 332 and a substantial decrease in overlay construction costs.

A statement made by POCOG said that changes to the venue plans would also “create a rousing atmosphere for everyone involved” and “ensure easier access and a safer slope”.

The Jeongseon Alpine Centre will host the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Snowboard World Cup Finals between 10-13 March 2017 and the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup between 11-18 of the same month.

POCOG Secretary General Yeo Hyung Koo said: “We expect that this consolidation of events will bring about efficient Games preparation and operations at both the test events next year and the Paralympic Winter Games in 2018, as well as substantial savings.”

Xavier Gonzalez, IPC chief executive, said it was a “good move for everyone, especially spectators”.
