Mohegan Sun to debut two Mandara Spas in multi-million dollar project
The Mohegan Sun – a 185-acre entertainment, gaming, dining and shopping destination in Connecticut, US – is undergoing a US$50m (€45m, £38m) renovation project that includes a revamp and rebranding of the property’s existing spa, along with a completely new Mandara Spa build out.
Mohegan Sun is working with Steiner Leisure to bring two Mandara Spas to the property; the new satellite spa will be part of the US$130m (€117m, £99m) Earth Tower, opening in Q3 2016, and will feature seven treatment rooms.
The Mohegan Sun’s existing 22,000sq ft (2,044sq m) flagship spa in the Sky Tower had been an Elemis Spa, but will be rebranded under the Mandara Spa brand. It is set for completion in 2017.
Elemis is a subsidiary of Steiner Leisure and will continue to be used at the new Mandara Spas, but will not be the focal point of the menu, said a spokesperson for the Mohegan Sun. In addition, the spa will add another of Steiner’s brands, Bliss, as a product house.
“The Mandara Spa brand has a global footprint, and its debut at Mohegan Sun will not only introduce innovative treatment and product offerings, but will also fuse time-honoured Balinese traditions with regional influences for an unparalleled spa experience,” said Leonard Fluxman, president and CEO of Steiner Leisure.
Housed on the third floor of the Mohegan Sun’s 34-storey, 1,200-bedroom hotel, the original spa featured eighteen treatment rooms, with a menu that combined signature Elemis treatments with Native American Mohegan themes and design elements, such as suites named Father Sky and Mother Earth.
The spa will remain the same in terms of size, but is still being configured. The new treatment menu will include a Mandara Customised Massage, a Mandara Signature Facial and a Mandara Ritual for the Hands and Feet, along with many new offerings.
While the Mandara Spa brand has its roots in Bali, the design of the new spa will not be traditional Balinese, but instead will be modern, utilising the elements of air, fire, water and earth found throughout the menu. These will be tied to Balinese culture, but presented in a more contemporary manner, and will take elements from the Mohegan Sun and the regional area and infuse them in the experience.
The US$50m (€45m, £38m) renovation project will also include upgrades to the hotel’s bedrooms, corridors and lobby, as well as the addition of two new restaurants and the launch of Hybrid Fusion games in the casino.
Owned by the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, the Mohegan Sun is home to three casinos, a 1,200-bedroom hotel, a golf course, and more than 85 shops, restaurants and bars, as well as three entertainment venues, including a 10,000-seat arena.
An Art of Shaving barber spa and shop opened earlier this month in the property’s retail area.
