New data portal launched to help one million more Londoners get active

by Jak Phillips | 25 Apr 2016

London Sport has announced the launch of a new insight and data portal as it seeks to make good on its goal of transforming London into the most active city in the world.

Due to go live this week, the platform will feature anonymised participant data from programmes administered and delivered by London Sport, alongside more than 60 datasets covering topics including active travel, facilities and workforce. Future sport participation, physical activity, active travel, attitudinal and demographic data is also scheduled to go online in the coming months.

The organisation hopes to herald in a “new era of open data” for physical activity and sport in the capital as it aims to get one million more Londoners active by 2020.

London Sport will use the participation data and insight to prioritise local and capital-wide strategic decision making, including informing decisions on how, and where, to focus funding and identifying key target groups.

“This new platform is our opportunity to demonstrate to the whole sector how much more we can achieve simply by combining and sharing our data and turning it into useful insight, with the same rigour that you would see in the commercial world,” said London Sport CEO Peter Fitzboydon.

“We want this platform to be a resource for everybody involved with physical activity and sport in London; we will be making more data, and more opportunities, available in the months to follow and encourage all organisations involved in physical activity and sport in the capital to consider how data could help us grow the sector, collaboratively.”

The new data platform will be available to organisations and members of the public from midday on Wednesday 27 April at http://data.londonsport.org and is the first in a series of proposed digital rollouts by London Sport aimed at supporting grassroots sport organisations over the coming months.
