Abandoned socialist landmark in Montenegro to be revitalised as urban space

A design collective made up of SADAR+VUGA, HHF architekten and local consultant Archicon have been selected for the redevelopment of a project in Montenegro, which is to be turned into an urban space after being abandoned in 1989.

Dom Revolucije (Home of Revolution) in Nikšic was originally designed by Slovenian architect Marko Mušic in the 1970s, but work was halted and abandoned after 11 years of development, leaving the site half-complete for the last 27 years.

Originally designed to represent the socio-political structure of Nikšic, Montenegro and Yugoslavia, the winning proposal will utilise the existing structure of Dom Revolucije, inserting minimal interventions to create a new space.

The plan introduces underground parking to serve as a gateway to the city, freeing up above-ground areas for pedestrian-friendly spaces with cafés, walkways and playgrounds. Internally, year-round options will include gallery spaces, educational workshops, a café and office space.

The design treats the existing part-completed structure as an urban landscape. According to the winning plan, 10 per cent of the space will have a defined, year-round function; 20 per cent will be occupied by a central promenade going through the building and 70 per cent will be updated to safe standards rather than being fully renovated.
