JW Marriott to debut in Japan

by Jane Kitchen | 16 Mar 2016

Marriott International is bringing its luxury brand JW Marriott to Japan, with the JW Marriott Hotel Nara, set to open in 2020 – the same year as the Tokyo Olympics.

The hotel is being built in conjunction with Japanese real estate development company Mori Trust Group, and will mark the JW brand’s debut in the country.

“Introducing the JW Marriott brand to the country, and in particular to the historic and culturally rich city of Nara, is an exciting milestone and we very much look forward to working closely with Mori Trust Group on the project,” said Arne Sorenson, president and CEO of Marriott International.

There is no word yet on whether the property will have a spa, the Spa by JW concept includes a focus on accessibility and a simple menu focused on four areas – calm, indulge, invigorate and renew – based on what a customer wants to feel. Spa by JW’s also usually feature express pods for customers to try out 15- to 25-minute services – without having to take their clothes off.

Located in the Kansai region of Japan, the city of Nara is known for its embodiment and preservation of traditional Japanese history and culture, and is home to many of the country’s oldest surviving palaces, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
