Olympic 2024 rivals meet sustainability requirements after first stage of bidding

by Matthew Campelli | 19 Feb 2016

All four cities vying to host the 2024 Olympic Games have officially submitted the first part of their bids in line with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Agenda 2020.

Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome have filed part one of their respective bids – Vision, Games Concept and Strategy.

According to IOC president Thomas Bach, all plans are “fully in line” with Agenda 2020, which calls for cities to present Olympic projects that match their long-term planning needs, the use of existing facilities and concepts that meet “local sustainability needs”.

“It is impressive to see how Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome have incorporated the Olympic project into the long-term development plans of their city, region and country,” said Bach. “Coming from different starting points, for all four there is a clear focus on sustainable development, legacy and particularly how the facilities are going to be used after the Olympic Games.”

The next stage of the bidding process requires the candidates to submit proposals regarding Governance, Legal and Venue Funding by 7 October 2016. The final step focuses on Games Delivery, Experience and Venue Legacy, which will have a submission deadline of 3 February 2017.

At the end of each stage, the IOC will confirm which cities have made the grade. A final decision on the host city will be made in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.

Jacqueline Barrett, associate director of Olympic Games Candidatures, added: “Following the Olympic Agenda 2020, the candidate cities are making use of an extremely high percentage of existing and temporary venues, possibly the most ever. The plans received indicate very thoughtful consideration of what the cities and their people need for the future.”
