'Landmark' Norwegian mega-spa transports guests around international spa cultures

The Well – a new three-storey, 10,500sq m (113,000sq ft) spa complex just outside Oslo – has opened to the public.

Located in Kolbotn, 11 miles (17km) south of the capital, the privately-owned spa, billed as the largest in Norway, has been designed to transport guests to different spa cultures from around the world.

Austrian spa design and equipment manufacturer Thermarium conceptualised and designed the wet spa, pool and treatment areas, while Norwegian architects Halvorsen & Reine designed the buildings that house them.

Adrian Egger, managing director for Thermarium, said The Well features “beautiful, straight, lines and typical Nordic design” and uses cutting-edge lighting technology to enhance relaxation.

“The project turned out really nicely, and it’s going to become a landmark in Europe for sure,” said Egger. “The quality of the materials and details, the Nordic design and the surroundings together create a very special harmony and make this project really unique.”

Facilities with distinctive international themes include a Japanese Onsen, a Nordic Laconium, a two-storey spruce-clad Blockhouse Sauna, an Art Deco steamroom, a jungle-inspired Egyptian Rasul and an Ambilight Cinema Sauna – where nature videos are screened and interact immersively with the sauna’s lights.

Speaking to CLAD last year, Egger said: “Visitors will feel they’re really going to another world, but they can still feel that it’s part of The Well.”

In total, The complex features 16 cabins with saunas and steamrooms, 24 showers, 10 foot basins, a large shower grotto with rocks, two whirlpools, an ice fountain, an onsen pool, a large indoor pool, and 16 treatment rooms with four wet massage tables.
