Moncton Downtown Centre designs revealed
Detailed plans have been revealed for the Moncton Downtown Centre, a 9,000-seat multi-purpose arena and entertainment complex designed by a team of architects lead by Populous and Stantec.
Located in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, designs for the CA$104.2m (US$79m, €72m, £52m) arena will feature a large civic plaza, aimed at connecting the building to the surrounding city and providing a gathering space for special events and concerts.
The civic plaza is capable of hosting events in the summer months and house an outdoor ice rink through the winter.
The building’s flexible interior and seating bowl design will allow for the arena to host everything from sporting events to concerts to community gatherings.
Scheduled for a September 2018 opening, it will have at least one permanent sports tenant – it will become the new home of the Moncton Wildcats ice hockey team, which plays in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The details were revealed following the Moncton City Council’s approval of the project in August.
"It's going to be truly multi-purposed,” said Jim Swords, senior architect and partner at Populous, adding that the new venue will looks to establish Moncton as a location for shows and tours that take in arenas at other large canadian cities – such as Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City.
As well as Populous and Stantec, the arena’s design and construction team consists of BDA Lanscape Architects and Bird Construction. Venue specialist SMG Canada has been given the contract to operate the arena.
