Lakefront architecture competition announced for the shores of Lake Michigan

by Katie Buckley | 07 Jan 2015

As part of the first ever Chicago Architecture Biennial, starting in October 2015, a lakefront architecture competition has been announced.

This competition aims to bring attention to Lake Michigan’s bustling shoreline and offers participants a chance to create “an iconic work of architecture that will attract visitors and enliven the lakefront all year round.”

As a celebrated public space in Chicago, the lakefront is currently features over twenty miles of public parks and beaches as well as cycle and pedestrian routes. In the summer, over forty kiosks are already in place along the shore, playing host to a range of commercial and recreational services.

The competition states that the design for a new kiosk will include a commercial function for the summer period (May-August), this will have to be flexible to accommodate vendors and change of use. The kiosk needs to be easily transportable to allow for installation in different places. The structure should also double as an attractive piece of architecture to entice visitors to the lakefront and enliven the surrounding area outside of the summer season.

A deadline for submissions has been set for 23 March 2015, with the winner announced in May. The chosen design will then be constructed at the Millenium Park and stay there for the duration of the Biennial (October 2015 – January 2016). Following this, the kiosk will be moved to the lakefront.

Winners will be awarded a US$10,000 (€8,400, £6,600) prize and will be given US$75,000 (€63,000, £50,000) to complete the build.
