AWP wins competition to design Malmo Quay in Newcastle
Paris-based AWP architecture firm has won a competition, launched in June 2014, to design a new public space and hub along the River Tyne in Newcastle, UK.
Malmo Quay, situated in the Ouseburn Valley in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, will be a landmark and cycle hub. The site will provide new space for outdoor sports with a community hall, restaurants and cafés, community spaces, working areas, and an open air cinema – which can also be used for theatre productions and concerts.
A new landmark will be formed of a lightweight steel ramp – up to a viewing point that will provide panoramic views of the Newcastle landscape. This can be accessed by bike or by foot. In keeping with the site's heritage background, the design aims to incorporate a boathouse-like structure – to allude to its naval history.
The overall project will be a renovation for the current space. It will also be intertwined with a wider residential development, currently being developed by Carillon for Igloo – an Aviva investor fund focused on regeneration projects.
