CIMSPA team in place to drive through transformation

by Jak Phillips | 07 Apr 2014

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has appointed a transitional management team to restructure the organisation in line with the business plan approved by members in November.

The team is charged with delivering the radical business plan designed to position the institute as the strategic lead for professional development. They will establish a number of new membership services including a mentoring programme, technical guidance for the sector, regional networks and a (Continuing professional development) CPD programme.

The team is comprised of interim chief operating officer Tara Dillon – on secondment from IQL UK – supported by Spencer Moore and Ben Gittus, who have joined from the Amateur Swimming Association and SkillsActive respectively.

They will report to CIMSPA trustee and ukactive CEO David Stalker, who began the business review in June 2013.

The review ultimately spawned plans for the institute to become the strategic lead for professional development with two long-term strategic priorities: to provide opportunities for young leaders to develop and succeed; and to provide leadership on the development and management of career pathways.

In a recent interview with Sports Management, Stalker said the institute probably received its charter mark earlier than it should have because of the 2012 Olympics, but believed the new review – which included discussions with more than 300 individuals within sport and physical activity – would lead to a focused chartered institute which the whole industry was in favour of.

Commenting on the appointments, CIMSPA interim chairman Carl Bennett said: “The new board of trustees are committed to delivering the promises of the business plan. As such, we felt it was crucial that a team was appointed to provide an exclusive focus on transforming the Institute.”

“We are delighted with the quality of the team who all contributed to the business review and have unquestionable experience of the sector and the challenges facing the Institute."
