Hotel website offers homelessness experience on streets of Gothenburg

A new hotel offering has been launched by Swedish magazine Faktum to help raise awareness of the rough sleeping conditions experienced by the homeless population in Gothenburg.

The Faktum Hotel has no bedrooms, but instead offers people the chance to book to stay in a choice of 10 rough-sleeping spots frequented by the city’s homeless community.

The magazine, which is sold by people without a home, has created a website with the help of media agency Forsman & Bodenfors, where the public can view and book the locations at the cost of €10 (US$13, £8) per stay. Bookings can either be made individually, or for a friend via Facebook.

Some of the spots being offered by the magazine include sleeping arrangements underneath a bridge, on a park bench and next to a waterway.

Paying guests can decide whether or not to turn up to the locations, with all of the money being raised by the booking fee going to help Faktum and its plight of assisting the homeless in the city.

The main goal of the project is to arouse debate and opinion about homelessness and isolation, with some of the stark sleeping conditions brought to light through the site’s ironic descriptions of the accommodation on offer.

Faktum’s hotel booking system and interactive website is available to view here.
