Work starts on second phase of Aston University development

A second stage of development work has now commenced at Aston University's Doug Ellis Woodcock Sports Centre in a bid to further enhance the institution's sporting provision.
Speller Metcalfe has been awarded the £3.2m contract to complete a final phase of structural works at the Grade II-listed building, as well as to build a new facility linked to the centre.
The new facility is to contain a four-court sports hall, squash courts and additional changing facilities. It has been designed by Robothams Architects, the design practice which also worked on phase one.
Aston University director of sport Mike Kirkman said: "The completion of the new sports hall and squash courts will further enhance the sports facilities provision we have on campus.
"This latest investment by the university underlines the importance which Aston attaches to the student experience on campus."
The second phase of work is due for completion early next year. The first stage included a 110-station Life Fitness gym and an upgraded swimming pool area.
Aston University acquired the sports centre building from Birmingham City Council in 1980, which includes the Grade II-listed pool - the city's oldest operational swimming facility.
