North Kensington leisure centre plans submitted

A planning application for a new leisure centre and academy in North Kensington, London, has been submitted to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC).

London-based architects Studio E have drawn up proposals on behalf of the local authority, having been selected from a shortlist of six design practices late last year.

The leisure centre element will feature a 120-station fitness suite with the option to partition the space for different user groups; a room for group cycling classes; and two fitness studios.

A 25m, eight-lane swimming pool with seating for 200 spectators; a 20m teaching pool; and a leisure pool are also proposed, in addition to an eight-court sports hall and squash courts.

Elsewhere, a spa suite containing sauna/steam facilities and treatment rooms is to feature as part of the new three-storey North Kensington leisure centre.

RBKC is expected to decide the fate of the planning application in September. If approved, it is hoped that the phased construction programme will be able to get underway this autumn.

The new leisure centre is scheduled to open in September 2014.
