Cardiff's new-look Sherman Cymru opens

Cardiff's Sherman Cymru has opened its doors to the public for the first time in two years, following the completion of a major GBP6.5m refurbishment of the arts venue.

Jonathan Adams of Capita Symonds, the man who designed Wales Millennium Centre and the WJEC building, was the architect behind the redevelopment of the theatre.

Work has included a new exterior and a foyer that has undergone a complete overhaul. The venue's public areas, rehearsal rooms and backstage areas have also been revamped.

Meanwhile, new seating has been installed in Theatre One and a upgraded electrical system also formed part of the scheme, along with the creation of a dedicated room for new work.

The Arts Council of Wales (GBP4.6m) and the Welsh Assembly Government (GBP180,000) have provided funding for the refurbishment, which was supplemented by donations.

Sherman Cymru director Chris Ricketts said: "This next step in our history will be all about producing and presenting great theatre, telling stories that have a real resonance for the widest possible audience.

"Our commitment to both English and Welsh language theatre and participatory events for young people continues and Sherman Cymru will be a special place to be for years to come."
