£35m Hepworth Wakefield art gallery opens

Hepworth Wakefield - one of the largest purpose-built art attractions to open in the UK for around 50 years - has welcomed its first public visitors in West Yorkshire.
Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the £35m gallery is run by an independent trust and aims to commemorate the work of local-born sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The 5,000sq m (53,819sq ft) attraction also houses the city's permanent collection of 6,000 art works - formerly on show at Wakefield's Art Gallery before it closed in March 2009.
In addition to the 10 galleries and learning studios, Hepworth Wakefield features an archive; an auditorium; a shop; a café; a bar with an outdoor terrace; and a riverside play area. Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: "After so many years in the making, it's tremendous to see the gallery opening. It will be a fantastic facility for both local people and visitors to the region.
"The Hepworth will bring economic and cultural benefits, celebrating our heritage and encouraging more investment in the future, placing Wakefield as a major centre for visitors from all over the country and abroad." Image: Hepworth Wakefield
