Kier provides Qatar venue energy system
Kier Group has provided the solar energy system for a 500-seat 'model' stadium in Qatar, which has been built to show how sustainable technologies can be used in such projects.
The zero-carbon venue has been designed by Arup Associates to illustrate how temperature and humidity levels can be controlled without requiring "vast amounts" of energy. Located on a sun farm outside the stadium, the solar panel system will supply the national grid and cool the stadium, which also features a motorised, rotating roof.
The system will see hot water will be piped from collecting tubes into a storage tank, before continuing into an absorption chiller that will charge an ice store to cool the venue. Qatar is now planning to build 12 full-size, zero-carbon stadiums similar to the 'model' as part of preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
