Green light for £26m Salford stadium plans
Salford City Council (SCC) has approved detailed plans for the construction of a new £26m stadium at Barton-upon-Irwell, which will provide a home for Salford City Reds rugby league team.
Preparatory work is already underway on site to enable the 20,000-capacity community venue to be ready in time for the start of the 2012 Super League season. Construction is due to commence in November. The stadium will be delivered and managed by developer Peel as part of a joint venture with the council, with player facilities, hospitality areas and two community outdoor sports pitches forming part of the scheme.
An outline application for non-food retail space has also been approved in principle as part of the plans. The communities secretary will now be asked to formally approve the development, having backed it in principle. According to SCC, the construction of the stadium will be phased and the retail units to be added at a later date.
