Grosvenor bags Southampton arts project

Southampton City Council has named property company Grosvenor as the preferred bidder for the city's new £13m arts complex.
Grosvenor's scheme, which will combine a mix of uses for the proposed site, was chosen over a number of competing bids.
Plans drawn up by Grosvenor's partner architects, CZWG, include 75,000sq ft of gallery spaces, auditoriums and educational areas as well as restaurants and retail units.
Councillor Royston Smith, cabinet member for economic development, said: "The Cultural Quarter is a key part of our wider plans for the physical regeneration of the city centre and economic development of the city.
"The Cultural Quarter proposals are helping to bring in around £175m of private and public investment to this area of the city.
"Choosing the preferred bidder for the Southampton Arts Complex and its overarching development is the next stage in moving this vision for the Cultural Quarter forward, and I congratulate Grosvenor for winning the tender and bringing us a step closer to having this visionary development built.
The actual build of Southampton's New Art Complex is subject to a full council decision on capital spend on 19 September and to confirmation of the Arts Council lottery funding of £5.7m in November.
The arts complex will form a part of the planned new Cultural Quarter for Southampton. Other projects include the Sea City Museum Project, scheduled to open in 2012.
