Eclectic to reopen Embargo

Eclectic Clubs and Bars will open its re-designed Embargo nightclub on King's Road in London later this month, following a £750,000 refurbishment.

The interior has been completely redesigned by Julian Taylor, and is described as "opulent with a hint of Cuban fusion", featuring exposed brick and gold floors and ceilings while an illuminated dance floor adds to the 1950s feel. The venue's capacity has also been increased to 300.

Eclectic, owned by entrepreneurs Reuben Harley, Roger Dyer and John Smith, has renamed the venue 'Embargo 59', in honour of its Cuban theme - Fidel Castro's revolutionary forces overthrew the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista on 1 January 1959.

"Even though Embargo has always been popular with locals and celebrities this marks its coming-of-age", said Eclectic's managing director Reuben Harley.

"We're taking a very successful venue and giving it even more style, class and sophistication to keep pace with the expectations of our demanding clientele."

The club's signature feature will be a walk-in cigar humidor adjacent to the 60-seat VIP area. Customers can buy from a hand-picked selection of fine Havana cigars, supplied by Chelsea-based Hunters & Frankau, which they can then store in their personal, lockable vault.

A smoking area, with its own bar, is provided on the club's roof with views over King's Road.

Eclectic Clubs and Bars owns and operates 13 venues, including the Po Na Na chain of bars, around the UK.

According to commercial director Roger Dyer, the company is looking to expand its foothold in the late night leisure sector.

"We are looking to expand the company exponentially and would see ourselves eventually operating around 20 bars and 20 clubs."
